the first ever National Bridesmaids Day!
Today marks the first ever National Bridesmaid Day! I can’t believe it took until 2011 to mark this holiday considering they have holidays like Take Your Fish to Work Day and National Chocolate Peanut Butter Peach Cobbler Pickle Day among other crazy ones.
As event planners, we know the important role bridesmaids play in not only the big day, but also the weeks and months leading up to it! We also know how much brides appreciate having some of their closet friends and family standing by them on their wedding day.
According to the US Census, for the past 20 years the pace of weddings has remained constant; an average of 2.25 – 2.5 million weddings taking place each year. Moreover, according to The Knot.com, each wedding has an average of four bridesmaids; meaning each year, some 10 million young women step up to embrace the role of Bridesmaid!
In honor of this day, if you’re married, reach out to your bridesmaids with a quick email or text and thank them again for sharing in your special day (even if it was 50 years ago!). If you’ve been in a wedding, shoot the bride a quick message and reminisce with her one of the best highlights from the wedding. It may sound a tad corny, but we ALL need some more sweet and simple emails/facebook messages/texts in our lives
Of course this holiday comes on the release of the movie Bridesmaids (smart move hollywood execs) which is now available to netflix, rent, buy, etc., and I highly recommend watching it if you didn’t in theaters. Pretty hilarious!
A few other fun bridesmaid facts:
- The phrase “often a bridesmaid, but never a bride” originated from a mouthwash advertisement from 1924.
- The universally known bridesmaid’s curse: “thrice a bridesmaid, never a bride” can be broken by being a bridesmaid seven times. (I personally need to be in 3 more weddings then!!!)
- Nearly 6% of bridesmaids confess to having been thrown out of the wedding party (drama, drama, drama!)
Happy first bridesmaids day! A special thanks to Aunt Lori & John, Lauren & Bill, Brittni & Josh and Emily & Matt for letting me share in your special day!
